TAPI aims to export up to 33 bcm per year of natural gas from the Galkynysh field, which has 453 bcm of gas reserves, in Turkmenistan through the 1,814 km long pipeline.

The Afghanistan-Pakistan section has a length of 1,600 km and includes several compressor and metering stations.

Under the plan, 38 mcm per day of gas will go to India and Pakistan each while 14 mcm per day will be bought by Afghanistan.

The pipeline will allow landlocked Turkmenistan to diversify its gas export markets to the southeast. Construction officially started at the end of 2015 and the pipeline had been originally set to become operational in 2018. But that deadline has been reset to late 2020 and may slip again until the early 2020s.
