The D9 prospect lies on Block 9 of the Krishna Godavari Basin on the East Coast of India and spans roughly 2.8 million acres (11,605 square kilometers) in the Bay of Bengal. Drilled by the Deepwater Expedition drillship, the exploration well KG-D9-A1 spud on Aug. 31, 2009 in a water depth of 9,035 feet (2,754 metres). The well is targeting the hydrocarbon potential of the Early and Middle Miocene sands and is planning to reach a total depth of 15, 814 feet (4,820 meters). Well KG-D9-A1 is the first targeted well of the four-well drilling program on the D9 license in the Krishna Godavari Basin. The block is estimated to contain 11 Tcf.
