Chemicals giant BASF started production at its news methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) plant at Changshou Chemical Industry Park (CCIP), in Chongqing, south-western China, in August 2015. MDI is the main raw material used for the production of polyurethanes.
In June 2007, BASF, Chongqing Chemical, Pharmaceutical Holding Company (CCPHC) and local authorities signed a memorandum of cooperation to build the plant at the US$4bn chemical park.
In 2011 BASF received approval from National Development and Reform Commission for MDI (Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) project in Chongqing, China. The plant is designed to produce 400,000t of crude MDI a year. It will also produce 400,000t of MDI splitting, 400,000t of nitrobenzene and 300,000t of aniline a year. Construction of the plant was entirely financed by BASF and required an investment of RMB8bn (US$1.21bn).
The plant covers an area of more than 50ha and forms the central part of an integrated petroleum and gas chemical complex operated by CCPHC. Construction of the chemical complex is estimated to cost US$5.3bn and is expected to generate RMB50bn (US$7.6bn) in production value.
BASF has been operating a MDI plant in Caojing, Shanghai, since 2006. The company also setup a polyurethane solutions system house in Chongqing for local production, sales and providing technical services.
