The El Assel licensed area is located in the Berkine Basin, 500 kilometres south of Algeria\'s capital city Algiers and 150 kilometres away from the oil production centre – town of Hassi Messaoud. El-Assel includes three blocks covering a total of 3,083 sq km, with average estimated recoverable oil reserves of 220 million barrels.
Gazprom and Sonatrach are exploring together the El Assel license. The two parties evaluated their cooperation in the gas sector as part of the joint development of hydrocarbon fields in Algeria.
Gazprom International, acting as operator from 2009 to 2016 during the three consecutive stages of exploration, has fulfilled its contractual commitments to the Algerian party Sonatrach. The following activities have been completed:
- 200 line kilometres of 2D seismic exploration
- 3,098 square kilometres of 3D seismic exploration
- The drilling of nine exploration and appraisal wells (with the combined depth of 41,423 metres)
