The project is located in the Gulf of Thailand, 203 kilometres off the coast of Songkhla Province and covers an area of 3,824 square kilometres.

The partners include PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited 44.4445%, TOTAL E&P Thailand 33.3333% and BG Asia Pacific PTE Ltd. 22.2222%. The project include also six fields: Bongkot, Ton Sak, Ton Rang, Ton Nok Yoong, Ton Koon and Ton Chan. The production started in 15 July 1993 and the production since 2008 is 604 million cubic feet per day of natural gas and 19,233 barrels per day. In total, there are 330 wells (68 exploration wells, 262 development wells) being drilled till now. In 1972, the Ministry of Industry granted Tenneco Thailand and BP Petroleum the concessions, which were later bought by Texas Pacific in 1978. Exploration was then started, leading to the discovery of natural gas of high potential.

Realising this gas field could contribute significantly to Thailand\'s economic development, the government purchased the concession rights back in 1988 and assigned PTTEP the core role in developing the project for the maximum benefit of the country. PTTEP then selected joint-venture partners and in 1990 signed a joint operating agreement for the Bongkot project with TOTAL, British Gas, and STATOIL (STATOIL withdrew from the Bongkot project in 1998). TOTAL was initially assigned as the operator of the project, with the agreement that it would transfer the control of operations to PTTEP five years from the start of production, or by the middle of 1998. On 1 July 1998, PTTEP, a fully Thai-owned company, took over the control of operations for the Bongkot project, the first natural gas field to be operated by Thais. In 2010, Dockwise was contracted by Hyundai Heavy Industries to transport and install the topsides of the southern production platform, by floatover, for the PTTEP Bonkot 4A central facilities in 2010
