The first installations for the oil refining were inaugurated in May 1958, a 170 hectare area in the neighborhood would come to be called Petrangol, about 14 kilometers from the city center and a few meters from Lighthouse Lobsters.

It was then created the Petroleum Company of Angola, a subsidiary of the Belgian Group Petrangol, whose share of refining at the time had an installed capacity of100.000 metric tons / year, in order to supply the Angolan market fuel.
On 27 October 1982, a entao Petrangol, owner of Luanda Refinary foi was acquired by oil company Fina, passing its name to Fina Angola Oil.

In 1981, year of intense war in Angola , its facilities have lived the first sabotage act carried out by the thenracist South African army,action that occurred specifically in Units 550 and 600 in the storage yard , and resulting in the destruction six[6] tank and a [1] LGP sphere,and led to a major fire proportions. However, the factory did not fail to operate. 
In 1987, another sabotage of the South African army refinery did not cause major damage, because the first of the premises is already undermined, as a security measure, and one of the robbers fired one of the devices, which discouraged the others that stood in disarray , without success. 
In 1991, he returned to register a new attempt factory destruction , this time in civil war who settled in the country. However, the act did not cause any damage to the refinery.

In June 1999, The oil company Total has acquired part of the shares of this plant, starting to manage along with Fina Petroleum de Angola.

In  February of 2000, Elf manages to acquire some shares and join the refining business in Angola, in partnership with Total and Fina- Total Fina Elf.

In May 2003, purchase all the shares of other companies and starts to manage the business as sole owner of the refinery.

In June 2007, given the strategic nature of this plant, the only refinery in the country, Sonangol acquired all the shares of the then owner Total in order to complete your business chain, adopting the name of Luanda Sonangol Refinery and becoming a Sonangol EP subsidiary. Since then, the refinery has become managed for the first time, by Angolans.

In 2012, Sonaref, which became a subsidiary of Sonangol EP and sub-holding of the refining business. 

In June 2018, Eni and Sonangol have signed a USD 220-million co-operation agreement to increase petrol output at the Luanda refinery from 280 tonnes to 1,200 tonnes per day.Eni will provide both technical assistance and financing, Jornal de Angola reported. Two stages of the project are planned, the first for maintenance and operational improvements, and the second for the construction of an additional unit to increase petrol production.

In June 2019, Sonangol has awarded the Construction Contract of the Gasoline Production Unit of the Luanda Refinery to United Shine.
