Tanzania LNG Project will be located on approximately 2,071.705 hectares (20.712 km) in Likong\'o Village in the town of Lindi on the Indian Ocean coast. Total recoverable natural gas reserves in Tanzania have been estimated to more than 57 trillion cubic feet (tcf). Royal Dutch Shell, Statoil, Exxon Mobil and Ophir Energy plan to build a natural gas processing plant and an export terminal in partnership with the state-run Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC).

In January 2016, TPDC finalised the land deal for the LNG project and acquired the title deed for about 2,071.705 hectares (20.712 km) of land for the LNG Trains as well as gas processing projects. The government has also set aside another 17,000 hectares (1702km) in surrounding areas for development of industrial parks that will purchase the gas from the facility. The gas liquefier and the export terminal are expected to be built at a cost of US$30 billion. The plant will have two processing units (trains) each with a capacity of 5 million tonnes per year. The project would have a lifespan of 40 years following the start-up. The construction is expected to take up to 40 months with production expected to commence in 2022.
