The project involves the exploration of the Hassi Mouina block. The Hassi Mouina licence comprises four blocks within a 23,000 square-kilometre area in the Gourara basin. The area is located in the Western Sahara in Algeria, northwest of the In Salah gas field.
Sonatrach has already drilled one well in the block and made a gas discovery which Statoil will be allowed to develop. Statoil has completed, as operator, an important exploration work programme which led to the discovery of dry gas both in the Northern and Southern parts of the License area in the Timimoun Basin. The gas discoveries are being evaluated for a possible development.
Statoil exited Hassi Mouina due to lack of commercial quantities of hydrocarbons. The relinquishment process started in 2014.
