Project Profile
Value: Undisclosed
Discovery: 1970
Production: 39 mcf per day
The Amistad field, which supplies a 130-MW power plant and an LNG liquefaction plant in Machala, is located around 60 km offshore in the Gulf of Guayaquil, in the Pacific Ocean. It is currently the only field that produces gas in Ecuador. It was discovered in 1970 but did not start producing until more than three decades later, in 2002, when a unit of US independent Noble Energy started it up.
In 2010, Petroamazonas assumed operatorship of the field when the US firm refused to switch from a production-sharing contract (PSC) to a service agreement.
Production was expanded in 2012 when three satellite platforms were installed, two of which are producing. A seven-well drilling programme was also embarked upon that year. The Amistad field corresponds to a conventional reservoir that has 196 sq.km of 3D seismic.
