Project Profile
Location: Tazovskiy District, Yamalo-Nenetskiy Autonomous Area, Russia
Value: US$4.5 billion
Reserves: 424.6 million tonnes (B1 + B2)
Start-up Year: 2018 (expected)
The Russkoe field is a giant field of heavy oil that is situated in Tazovskiy District of Yamalo-Nenetskiy Autonomous Area, within the Arctic Circle in Russia. based on preliminary estimates, the initial field reserves are in excess of 1 billion tonnes. The recoverable 3P reserves amount to 2.25 bbbl. The field was discovered in 1968. Tyumenneftegaz came to be the subsoil user in 1995 and later became part of TNK-BP. Russkoe field remained undeveloped for more than 35 years.
After the field had been discovered, 60 wells were drilled including 39 exploration, 13 wildcat and 8 development wells. In August 2012, nine wells were drilled in two pilot areas of the field. Six of those are production wells, one gas well and two water wells. Due to the fact that Russkoe field oil is highly viscous, it is necessary to construct systems for blending oil in pipelines. If there are no such systems, Russkoe oil production will peak at approximately 10 mmtpa. A new oil treatment unit with a throughput capacity of 3 mmtpa is expected to be constructed before the start of commercial development.
For the transportation of oil from the Russkoe deposit, a pressure pipeline with a length of 65 km is under construction. It will ensure a 100% transfer of oil and will connect the field with the main oil transportation system "Zapolyarye - Purpe".
