Project Profile
Location: Forelands, Papua New Guinea
Value: Undisclosed
Discovery: 1957
Reserves: 800 bcf of recoverable natural gas
PRL-9 is located in Forelands, Papua New Guinea and contains Barikewa gas field. Barikewa is assessed to contain approximately 800 billion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas. The Barikewa gas field was discovered in 1957 by the Barikewa-1 well. The well intersected gas in the Toro and Hedinia sandstones and flowed up to 9 mmscf/d on test. No gas-water contact was penetrated. The Barikewa-2 well was drilled in 1982 but failed to intersect hydrocarbons due to unexpected faulting. To date the Barikewa structure has only been defined by surface geological mapping and one seismic line recorded in 1997.
In 2009 Cue Energy had conducted Barikewa 2D seismic survey. The survey comprised 60km of 2D seismic data and was scheduled to be completed by mid January 2010. The objective of the survey was to provide improved definition of the structure, to locate a Barikewa-3 well. The seismic survey was operated by Oil Search. Oil Search had spudded the Barikewa-3 appraisal well in June 2018.
