Kenya Line 5 project is the backbone of KPC’s wider distribution network – which stretches to Eldoret and Kisumu in the west.
Line 5 connection comprises a new 450-km, 20-inch (508 mm) oil products pipeline from Mombasa to Nairobi. The pipeline has an installed flow rate of 1 million litres per hour. The pipeline is a replacement to an ageing 14-inch (356 mm) 830,000-lph pipeline – installed in the early 1970s. The old line is susceptible to ruptures and blockages, leaving throughput well below the design capacity.
The Mombasa – Nairobi Pipeline seeks to ensure reliable transportation of petroleum products and meet demand over the next 30 years. The pipeline will also improve the reliability of fuel supply to the Uganda, Rwanda and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The Line 5 project is expected to remove some 700 fuel tankers from the roads per day. The operator plans a further expansion of the line - 1.9 million litres per hour in phase two by 2023 and 2.6 million litres per hour in phase three by 2044.
