El Trapial was discovered by San Jorge in 1991 and brought onstream in 1992. In 1999, Chevron acquired the field. The project area includes the Curamched field as well as a southward extension of the nearby Chihuido de la Sierra Negra field. The El Trapial field was developed as a conventional field, reaching peak production in 2002. In 2014, Chevron drilled four pilot wells to test unconventional prospects in the field.
Chevron uses waterflood operations to mitigate declines at the field. The company is currently exploring for unconventional oil and gas resources in the Vaca Muerta Shale. Chevron plans to start a shale appraisal program in late 2018.
