Project Profile

Location: Kwanza Basin, Angola
Area: 14,000 sq. km
Depth: 1,500-2,500m

Blocks 38 and 39 are situated in the Kwanza Basin and cover an area of 14,000km2 in water depths of 1,500-2,500m. The exploration licences hold multi-billion barrel prospectively and represent a relatively low risk, high impact near-term exploration opportunity. The play was de-risked by exploration drilling in Angola and in the directly analogous Santos and Campos Basins offshore Brazil. A working hydrocarbon system has already been established in the Kwanza Basin through the Cameia, Lontra, Mavinga, Bicuar and Azul discoveries, which are located on licences directly adjacent to Blocks 38 and 39.

The Stena Carron drillship was been contracted for a drilling programme which commenced in June 2014 with the spudding of the Dilolo prospect. This failed to discover hydrocarbons. The exploration licence for Block 39 expired in December 2016.

The exploration well on the Jacare prospect on Block 38 offshore Angola spudded in mid-September 2014.
