Luva gas field is located 186 miles offshore in the Norwegian North Sea. It is situated in blocks 6706/12 and 6707/10 at a water depth of 4,265ft (1,300m). It lies in Production License 218.In March 2012, the Luva field was officially renamed after Aasta Hansteen, a campaigner for women’s rights in Norway. Statoil operates the field with a 75% interest, while ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips hold 15% and 10% interest respectively. The field is estimated to contain about 40 to 60 billion standard cubic metres of gas and 5.6 million barrels of condensate. First gas production is expected in 2014.Norway is the second biggest exporter of gas in the world after Russia. It intends to develop a production hub in the Norwegian Sea by developing the Luva, Linnorm and Zidane discoveries.#Discovery of the Norwegian North Sea field#The Luva field was discovered in 1997. It was initially operated by BP, which discovered gas in deep waters (1,274m) in the Vøring Basin of the Norwegian Sea.Statoil acquired the field in 2006. Statoil discovered gas at two more prospects named Haklang and Snefrid South in 2008.#Development of Luva in Production License 218#In 2008, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate issued a drilling permit for appraisal well 6706/12-1 at the Luva field. The Transocean Leader semisub drilled the appraisal well at a vertical depth of 4,325m under the lower parts of the Nise formation in Upper Cretaceous rock. The well confirmed a gas column in the lower part of the Nise formation. The field is expected to hold 53.1 billion cubic metres of gas reserves and 5.6 million barrels of condensate. The current field development plan for Luva includes developing the gas transportation concepts and power supply infrastructure, which are estimated to cost about NKr 213m ($33m). The development is expected to be completed in December 2016.In December 2011, Statoil decided to conduct an environmental and community impact assessment study before beginning the development work on the field.#Spar platform to be used at Statoil’s North Sea gas field#The Luva gas field will be developed using a spar platform. It is expected to be the first spar platform in the Norwegian Continental Shelf. It will also be the world’s largest spar. The floating platform will feature a processing facility, a single vertical cylinder, a supporting conventional deck and accommodation quarters, for permanent crew working around the clock at the facility. It will have two subsea templates with four wells on each, as well as a satellite template with one well. It will also have a storage unit condensate and a gas storage facility with a capacity of 23m cubic metres a day.The platform will facilitate future tie-ins of other discoveries in the same area. The estimated cost of developing the platform is Nkr 34 billion ($5.84bn).#Exportation pipeline details and contractors involved with the Luva gas field#The gas from Luva field will be exported to the onshore processing terminal at Nyhamna, which currently serves the Ormen Lange field.A 300-mile (482km) pipeline is scheduled to be built to transfer the gas to the Nyhamna terminal. The pipeline will have a diameter of 30-36 inches. In March 2012, Aker Solutions and Technip were awarded a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract to design the world’s largest spar platform for the Aasta Hansteen (Luva) field. The FEED study is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2012. The new spar hull will have a length of 193m (633ft) and draught of 170m (557m).The scope of contract includes design, planning, procurement, construction and transportation of a spar hull and the mooring systems. It also includes design of the steel catenary risers.Gassco will conduct an impact study on the export pipeline from Luva field to Nyhamna.
