Project Profile
Location: Republic of Zambia
Area: 6,000 sq km
Start-up Year: -
Block 44 lies in the southern part of Zambia and covers an area of 6,000km2 on the margins of the Karoo-aged Kariba basin. During the 1980s petroleum exploration in Zambia focused on the Karoo basins of Kariba and Luangwa. There were 2 dry wells drilled after a large 2D seismic programme carried out in 1986 and 1987. Field studies and the results of the two wells drilled to the north suggest that the basin is gas- prone, although coals and coaly shales from some formations in the Luangwa Basin have the potential to generate light oil.
