Shaybah is located in the high dunes of the Rub' al-Khali (Empty Quarter), where Arabian Extra Light (AXL) oil was discovered in in 1968. Shaybah’s proven reserves are estimated at approximately 14.3 billion barrels of oil and approximately 25 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas. Initial Shaybah project started in the late 1990s, two new projects were carried out by Saudi Aramco in Shaybah: the Oil Field Expansion Project and the Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) Recovery Project. The field, has already undergone a huge US$3 billion expansion to increase its oil capacity by 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 750,000. Saudi Aramco has finalized its bid selection for the four Lump Sum Turn Key (LSTK) contracts of the Shaybah natural gas liquids (NGL) Program, selecting Samsung Engineering Co. Ltd. to perform the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work for all the four packages. The scope of this major award includes the construction of the inlet facilities, NGL recovery trains, dehydration, residue gas compression, acid gas compression, NGL storage and shipping, the upgrade of the gas handling capacity for the four existing Shaybah gas oil separation plants (GOSPs) and other associated facilities. Shandong Electrical Power Construction Co., was selected for the Shaybah Combined Cycle Facility Package. The scope of work in this package includes converting the existing six simple cycle gas generators to two blocks (three each) of combined cycle power generation. A joint venture between US oil and gas contractor Foster Wheeler and Saudi Arabian firm SOFCON has been awarded the FEED study for the development of gas supplies from the Shaybah field by Saudi Aramco. KBR announced that it has been awarded a contract by Saudi Aramco to provide front-end engineering and design FEED, and Project Management Services (PMS) for its Shaybah Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) Program at Shaybah field located in Saudi Arabia.
