Shell has agreed the sale of its 9% stake in the Polarled gas pipeline to a European acquisition fund as part of the ongoing upstream consolidation strategy. Polarled gas pipeline is a 480km long pipeline planned to be laid between the Aasta Hansteen field in the Norwegian Sea and the Nyhamna gas processing facility in western Norway. The pipeline will have a diameter 36in and capacity of 70 million cubic metres per day.
The project, which was earlier known as the Norwegian Sea Gas Infrastructure (NSGI) scheme, will require an estimated investment of Nrk25bn ($4.3bn). It is expected to set a world record in deep water installation of a pipeline. The pipeline is expected to become operational in late 2016. he field development includes the installation of a SPAR platform which will be tied-in with the Polarled gas pipeline. The field is estimated to contain 47 billion cubic metres of gas. It is expected to start production in the third quarter of 2017 at the rate of 130,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
The project also includes the expansion and upgrade of the Nyhamna processing plant. The pipeline, which has a diameter of 36 inches, extends from Nyhamna in Møre og Romsdal to the Aasta Hansteen field in the Norwegian Sea and was laid by the world's largest pipelaying vessel: “Solitaire” from Allseas.
