Kalamkas is one several fields in the North Caspian Operating Co. PSA, which also includes the giant Kashagan offhore field.
The Kalamkas-1 well was drilled in 2002 at a total depth of 2,360 metres. The well encountered hydrocarbons in the Kalamkas structure and testing has indicated an initial oil flow rate of 2,300 bpd on a 32/64 inch choke.
In January 2016, the Kazakh Energy Ministry announced plans to study the possible development of Kalamkas in that year.

North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) is an operating company for the North Caspian Sea Production Sharing Agreement (NCSPSA). NCOC is based in Atyrau, Kazakhstan.
The agreement includes seven companies consisting of KazMunayGas, Eni, ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Total S.A. (16.81% each ), China National Petroleum Corporation (8.4%) and Inpex, (7.56%).
