Through its acquisition of Nautical Petroleum plc in August 2012 Cairn Energy held a 37.5% operated interest in the Juby Maritime blocks alongside partners Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines (ONHYM) 25% and Genel Energy plc 37.5%. The blocks are located 60km offshore the Atlantic coastline of Morocco in water depths of 100-1,500m covering an area of 5,600km2.
The partners planned to drill an exploration well in early 2014 in the Juby Maritime permit to target a Middle Jurassic carbonate prospect some 1,000 metres below an old heavy oil discovery in the Upper Jurassic, subject to the necessary approvals. Cairn estimates the Cap Juby Middle Jurassic prospect gross mean prospective resource exceeds 70 mmbbls. The existing 3D data over Cap Juby was reprocessed and the 680km2 3D seismic survey, acquired by Cairn in 2012 over a separate carbonate prospect in Juby Maritime, was also processed.
