Abkatún-Pol-Chuc is in the Campeche basin, between the states of Campeche and Tabasco, and about 132km northeast from the port of Dos Bocas maritime terminal. Operated by Pemex, Abkatún-Pol-Chuc, located in shallow water, has been operational since 1976, when the Pol field – part of Abkatún-Pol-Chuc – was discovered. The area started production in 1980, and peaked in February 1996 at 754,934b/d. Abkatún-Pol-Chuc comprises 18 fields, of which 10 are currently in production. Now a mature field, Abkatún-Pol-Chuc has so far produced 5.54bn barrels of oil and 6.35Tf3 (180Bm3) of gas. After production peaked, Pemex tried a number of enhanced oil recovery techniques, the most successful of which has been water injection. The viscosity of the oil produced in the field (37°API and 40°API) is what makes it important to Pemex. Pemex has committed to invest significant amounts to both manage the decline of larger, mature fields within Abkatún-Pol-Chuc and to develop more recent discoveries like Kuil. Abkatún-Pol-Chuc was the scene of some of Mexico's earliest offshore oil developments, according to Wood Mackenzie.
