The offshore Chuchupa natural gas field in Colombia's La Guajira department is operated by Chevron in partnership with Colombia's state oil firm Ecopetrol. Two platforms are in operation at the field, Chuchupa A and B. In January 2014, natural gas production reached 481.8Mf3/d and gradually decreased to 424.3Mf3/d by January 2015. By the end of 2014, the GACE (gas association contract extension) IV project was finished, which aims to increase the field's recovery factor by up to 90% over the coming years and to extend the Chuchupa production plateau. Also, in May 2014, a joint investment between Chevron and Ecopetrol totaling US$249mn was announced. The companies will implement various projects to optimize their gas operations at Chuchupa, as well as onshore Ballena and Riohacha, in order to increase gas production to 50Mf3/d by 2031. Even though this field's production, combined with Ballena and Riohacha, produced over 50% of Colombia's natural gas a few years back, new producers have stepped in. Equion Energía's Piedemonte, Tauramena, Recetor and Cusiana Norte blocks, as well as the Cupiagua and Cupiagua Sur fields, operated by Ecopetrol since 2010, now make up 58% of the country's gas production.
