Start-up Year: -

In November 1991 British Gas found oil in the wildcat Salloum #1 (SAM1), drilled to a total depth of 3,371m at an offshore location northeast of Sfax 2km from the coast, offshore Tunisia. The well tested at a rate of 1,800 BOPD of 41 API oil (no water) and 385 MSCFPD, from pay zone in the objective Upper Cretaceous Douleb/Bireno carbonates through perforations at 3,205-3259m. This discovery is in close proximity and similar in structural nature to the onshore Gremda and El Ain fields which were discovered in 1980 and 1982 respectively, and also the Rhemoura field which was discovered in 1991. All of the oil in these fields is produced from the limestones and dolomites of the Late Cretaceous Bireno Formation. In general, the reservoir characteristics of the Bireno at Salloum include porosities that range from 10% to 25% with corresponding permeabilities that range from < 1 mD to over 500 mD. Atlas Petroleum Exploration Worldwide, Ltd (APEX) operates and owns the discovery.

Due to the sparse nature of the 2D seismic coverage in the Salloum area, APEX decided with its partner to acquire a transition zone 3D survey over the area. The survey, initiated on July 8, 2007 was completed on July 22, 2007. Although still awaiting delivery of the final processed volumes, preliminary evaluation of the data is bearing up the validity of APEX’s intitial interpretation. Based on APEX’s current structural interpretation of the Douleb, an attic well location could get as much as 35m higher on the structure and potential reserves are considered by APEX to be in excess of 35 MMBO.
