The Riohacha field began gas production in 1978 and produced oil between 1997 and 1999. The field was subsequently reactivated in 2012. Chevron, in partnership with Colombia's national oil company Ecopetrol, currently operates the field. Natural gas output fell from 33.8Mf3/d in January 2014 to 7.7Mf3/d in January 2015, according to the ANH. In May 2014, a joint investment between Chevron and Ecopetrol was announced, totaling US$249mn. The companies aim to optimize their gas operations at offshore Chuchupa, and onshore Ballena and Riohacha in order to increase gas production to 50Mf3/d by 2031.
