Project Profile

Value: US 8.5 billion
Location: Plaquemines Parish, 20 miles south of the Port of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Area: 632 acres
Processing capacity: 20 million metric tonnes per year
Storage capacity: 185,000 cubic metres
Operational by: 2023
Construction begins: 2018

The Plaquemines LNG project is located approximately 20 miles south of the Port of New Orleans. The venture is currently being developed by Venture Global Plaquemines LNG, LLC, a subsidiary of Venture Global LNG, Inc. Plaquemines LNG is Venture Global’s second proposed LNG export project.

The 632-acre site is located on the Mississippi River, with approximately 7,000 feet of river frontage. The Mississippi River provides significant benefits for building a liquefaction facility. With deep-water access, the project will not require dredging, which allows for an expedited, environmentally-friendly development process. When fully developed the facility is estimated to have an export capacity of 20 million metric tonnes per year of LNG.

The facility would consist of 20 pre-cooled single mixed refrigerant (SMR) blocks, four 200,000 cubic meter LNG storage tanks, three marine loading berths for oceangoing vessels within a common berthing area, and on-site electric power generation. Each LNG block would have a nameplate liquefaction capacity of 1 million tons per annum. Each marine loading berth would be able to accommodate LNG carrier with the capacity between 120,000 cbm and 210,000 cbm.

The project is proposed to be built in two phases, the first including 10 of the LNG blocks, two storage tanks, two marine loading berths and on-site power generation. The second phase of the project would be constructed in case of an increased market demand and will involve an additional 10 million metric tonnes per year. Under optimal design conditions, the project may produce up to 24 mtpa, or the equivalent of approximately 1,240 Bcf/yr of natural gas.

Phase 1 is to consist of 10 million metric tonnes per year and to be constructed upon receipt of all required permits and authorizations.
