The well is located in the Vaca Muerta shale region, one of the largest in the world and a key development region for Argentina’s energy programme. The Invernada X-3 well flowed in December 2014 at 448 barrels of oil and 1 million cubic feet of gas a day. Exxon owns 85% of the site, with the remainder held by a Neuquen Gas and Oil, a provincially owned oil and gas firm.
ExxonMobil started a production pilot from the La-Invernada and Bajo del Choique blocks in August 2016, and aims to drill 556 horizontal wells over ten to 20 years the licences, which have been combined into a single operation.
