Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit: average 25 000 bpd
Start-up Year: 2020

At the beginning of the last century, the first crude oil refinery in the country was started up in Talara, seashore province of Piura Department. The desert and Talara Sea have been keeping the oil field, which the ancient Peruvian called “copé,” a kind of tar that was highly appraised by the Spanish who had conquered Tahuantinsuyo. In the XX century, due to its wealth, this city became one of the most important oilpatches in Peru. Talara Refinery is located in the city bearing the same name, in Piura, at 1,185 km to the North of Lima, the capital of Peru and it occupies of 128,9 hectares area.

PMRT or Talara Refinery Modernisation Project is an engineering and construction project that covers the implementation of new installations as well as the modernisation and extension of the existing ones in order to: desulfurise fuels, improve fuels quality, process heavier crudes and implement new facilities needed for the modernised refinery.

MODERNISATION OF EXISTING INSTALLATIONS:

- Primary Distillation Unit: It performs the first separation of crude, that then will be turned into different products. With its extension it will be possible to increase from 65,000 bpd to 95,000 bpd.
- Vacuum Distillation Unit: The unit produces 27,000 bpd. In order to provide more feed to the new Vacuum Distillation Unit, this unit would decrease its production to 21,000 bpd.
- Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit: It breaks gas oil molecules to produce LPG, gasoline and diesel. It will be modified to manage more feed, on average 25 000 bpd.

DESULFURISATION UNITS

- Diesel Desulfurisation: Removes sulfur from diesel and improves its cetane number.
- Cracked gasoline desulfurisation: It will permit the desulfurisation of the gasoline that comes from the Catalytic Cracking Unit and will be designed with a new technology to comply with sulfur specifications, without reducing the product quality. Naphtha Desulfurisation: It will remove sulfur from naphtha that will then be sent to the Catalytic Reforming Unit.
- Amine Absorber – Stripper: There will be several amine plants that will have as function to remove sulfur compounds from waste gases to send them to the Sulfuric Acid Plant. Sweet gases will be used as fuels.
- LPG Treatment (Liquefied Petroleum Gas): It treats the LPG that comes from the Gas Recovery Unit, by reducing its content of sulfur and improving its quality.

PROCESS UNITS

- New Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU): It will be installed an additional unit, which will be twice as big as the existing one, in order to increase the capacity of processing crude. This new unit will be able of processing 35,000 bpd.
- Flexicoker Unit: It processes the vacuum bottoms that come from the VDU, turning them into light fuels, flexigas and coke. It will process feeds of heavier crude and will obtain more quantity of light and middle distillates (gasoline and diesel)
- Catalytic Reforming: It increases gasoline quality and produces hydrogen necessary for Naphtha Desulfurisation and part of the required by other Desulfurisation processes. The resulting product is a mixture of high octane number.
- Sulfuric Acid Plant: It will turn waste gases into sulfuric acid for its subsequent marketing.
- Hydrogen Plant: It produces hydrogen and purifies the product generated by the Catalytic Reforming for its subsequent use in the desulfurisation units.
- Cogeneration: It will be a plant fed with flexigas and coke of the Refinery and will produce vapor and electricity.

Operators:

Petroperu: Operator with 100% interest

Contractors:

Tecnicas Reunidas: FEED and EPC contract for the modernization project . TR’s scope of work involves:
- expansion and modification of existing process units, including the primary distillation unit, catalytic cracking complex, and vacuum distillation unit.
- construction of processing units, which include a diesel hydrotreater, both cracked naphtha and naphtha hydrotreaters, a vacuum distillation unit, flexicoker, naphtha catalytic reforming unit, amine unit, and cogeneration units.
- expansion and upgrade of the utilities and off-sites installations.

Flowserve: Installation of pumping systems.
- > seven types of pumps as part of the order, which includes proprietary horizontal overhung process pumps (OH2 and OH3) and horizontal between-bearing pumps (BB1, BB2, and BB3). Pump orders for the contract amount to about US$18 million.
