Project Profile
Location: Block BM-S-24, roughly 180 miles off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Water Depth: 7,175 feet (2,187 metres)
Reserves: Estimated to contain 1 billion barrels of confirmed resources (130 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) - Jupiter)
The drillship Ocean Clipper discovered a new field, Jupiter, on Jan. 21, 2008. The 1-BRSA-559A-RJS well is located on Block BM-S-24, roughly 180 miles (290 kilometres) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in a water depth of 7,175 feet (2,187 metres). Petrobras, the operator, has an 80% vested interest of the field; Galp Energia, holds the remaining 20% interest. The drilling of well 1-BRSA-559A-RJS confirmed that Jupiter is a large natural gas and oil field located in a pre-salt layer. The field is considered to be mainly a gas reservoir, with a high content of carbon dioxide, but tests are being conducted at Petrobras\' Research Centre to analyse the percentages of the discovered components.
A second well was drilled in November 2008 to confirm the exact gas to oil ratio of Jupiter. The results have not yet been made public. Currently, Jupiter is estimated to contain 1 billion barrels of confirmed resources, but an exact reserve estimate of the field has not yet been completed. Partners of the field think it is comparable to the nearby Tupi field, which boasts recoverable reserves of 8 Bboe. In 2015, Petrobras filed with the National Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP) the Declaration of Commerciality of the oil accumulation in northwest of the Júpiter Discovery Evaluation Plan (PAD) – Block BM-S-24 – in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin. The field’s total recoverable volume is estimated at 130 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe).
