Kosmos Energy signed two production sharing contracts with Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V., the national oil company of Suriname, for offshore blocks 42 and 45 in December 2011. The two blocks are located approximately 155 miles (250 kilometres) from Paramaribo and they cover a total area of nearly 3 million gross acres (12,141 sq km), in water depths of between 650 and 8,500 ft (198 and 2,2591 m). Kosmos had agreed to operate both blocks with 100% working interest. In the initial exploration phase under each of the contracts, Kosmos plans to acquire 3D seismic data. The company targets first drilling as early as 2014.
In June 2012, Chevron Corporation through its wholly owned subsidiary Chevron Global Energy Inc. (Chevron) was assigned a 50 percent working interest in Blocks 42 and 45 offshore Suriname through an agreement with Kosmos Energy. Under the agreement, Kosmos will have a 50 percent working interest and remain operator of both blocks until the end of the exploration phase. Chevron will assume the remaining 50 percent working interest and will be the operator following any commercial discoveries.
