Block 188 is located in the south eastern part of the Ucayali basin. This block in southern Peru covers 595,809 hectares and is located only 100 kms north east of the Camisea gas field. The Block 188 is part of the former Block 110 operated by Petrobras. Block 188 is covered by seismic 2D acquired by Murphy Pangaea in the 1997 and 1998.

Near to the Block 188, three wells have been drilled: La Colpa 1X, Platanal 1X and Shahuinto 1X. La Colpa 1X and Platanal 1X wells were drilled by OXY in 1998 and 1989, Shahuinto 1X well was drilled by Cia. Murphy in 1998. These wells were drilled to TD into Basement, which were reached to 2100 and 3500 m. La Colpa well proved non- commercial oil production in the Cretaceous sandstone (47 bbls, 23 ºAPI), the Copacabana (88 BO, 26.3º) and the Tarma Green sandstone (7.5 bbls, 29.4º API). Strong oil shows were encountered through the entire Copacabana carbonate section and in the upper portion of the Ambo Formation. Oxy assigned in-place reserves of 58 MMBO to the Colpa structure. Recent studies indicate that the oil discovered in this well was charged with oil from Late Permian Ene Formation. To the northwest, in 1976, Burmah Oil plc (Signal) drilled three wells: Río Caco 1X (Test, at the top of Cushabatay Formation), Shanuya 1X and Tamaya 1X. Shanuya and Tamaya wells before TD drilled around 100 m of sedimentary sequences interpreted as Ene Formation (Late Permian). Oil shows were encountered in these wells, but none of them were completed for testing.

In the latest bid round (October 2010), Clontarf Energy won the Peruvian block Lote 188. The Group first entered Peru in 2006, initially as Pan Andean Resources plc. These interests were sold at a profit in 2010.
