Project Profile

Location: from Mombasa in Coast Province to Nairobi, Kenya
Value: Undisclosed

Length: 450 km

Start-up Year: 2018
Construction of Nairobi-Mombasa Products Pipeline began in July 2014 and replaces a pipeline built in 1973 by Lebanon’s Zakhem International that had outlived its 30-year lifespan. The 450km pipeline will eliminate an estimated 700 oil tanker trucks per day that transport fuel by road between Mombasa and Nairobi. It will also enhance and improve the reliability of fuel supply to the export markets of Uganda, Rwanda and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The new pipeline is designed to meet petroleum products demand for the Eastern Africa Region up to the year 2044. The new pipeline system consists of:
- 452 kilometres long pipeline, 14 inches in diameter;
- four electric powered pump stations, with related instruments, one of which will be located in Mombasa and the other three at approximately equal distances along the pipeline route;
- a 2 kilometer lateral pipeline, 14 inches in diameter, from the main pipeline to the new Nairobi Airport at Embakasi;
- storage facilities at Nairobi;
- a supervisory control and communications system;
- buildings including depots and operating staff living quarters at pump stations located some distance from populated areas.
