Project Profile
Value: US$2 billion (up to July 2016)
Location: 200 miles offshore Rio de Janeiro, Santos Basin, Brazil
Water Depth: 2,027 m
Recoverable reserves: 2 billion barrels of high-quality oil (estimated)
Start-up Year: mid 2020s
The BM-S-8 block offshore Brazil contains part of the pre-salt Carcara oil field. The other part of the unit is in the adjacent North Carcara block.
The Carcara discovery is situated in Block BM-S-8 in the pre-salt area of the Santos Basin. Petrobras made a discovery of a high-quality oil accumulation in Block BM-S-8. The discovery was found during the drilling of well 4-SPS-86B (4-BRSA-971-SPS), unofficially known as Carcara, 232 kilometres off the coast of Sao Paulo in March 2012. Sampling confirmed the presence of oil at approximately 31 degree API in reservoirs 5,750 metres deep. The well continues to be drilled with the aim of determining the lower limit of reservoirs and to identify other possible zones of interest.
