Project Profile
Value: US$4,000 million
Consumption: 253,000 cubic metres per day
Capacity: 4.1 million cubic metres of gas per day
Length: 661 km of trunk line and 140 km of extensions
Start-up Year: November 2009
Location: Transport gas produced in the Solimões Basin in Urucu, to Manaus, the capital city of the state of Amazonas, located in northern Brazil.
The inauguration of the Urucu-Coari-Manaus gas pipeline took place on the 26th of May 2009. The first unit to receive the natural gas is Petrobras\' Isaac Sabbá Refinery (Reman), which will have an initial consumption of 77,000 cubic metres per day. In January 2010, consumption there is expected to increase to 253,000 cubic metres per day.The gas pipeline\'s initial transportation capacity is 4.1 million cubic metres of gas per day. With the installation of two intermediary compression stations between Urucu and Coari, this capacity will rise to 5.5 million cubic metres per day, the total contracted capacity, in September 2010. The Urucu-Coari-Manaus gas pipeline allows the natural gas produced in the Solimões Basin - Brazil\'s second biggest reserve, estimated at 52.8 billion cubic metres, second only to Rio de Janeiro (144.8 billion cubic metres) - to be made available to the market. Until now, production had been reinjected on account of a lack of transportation infrastructure.
The SolimÕes Basin is Brazil’s second largest gas reserve, holding an estimated 52.8 Bcm of gas. Currently, 4.1 MMcm/d of gas is transported through the pipeline, with capacity to increase to 5.5 MMcm/d of gas once construction on the Juaruna and Coari compressor stations is completed in October 2010.
The main trunkline is divided into two sections:
An 18 inch diameter, 278 km Urucu to Coari API 5L X65 steel pipeline section; and,
A 20 inch diameter, 383 km Coari to Manaus API 5L X70 steel pipeline section.
Transpetro will operate the gas pipeline. To face the unique conditions in the Amazon, a team of operators was trained for two years to do the work. As the other gas pipelines under Transpetro\'s operating responsibility, the Urucu-Coari-Manaus gas pipeline will be operated in a remote, automated manner by means of the National Operational Control Center (CNCO), headquartered in Rio de Janeiro.
