One of Peru\'s biggest areas for oil and gas is the Camisea Field, located in the southeastern part of Peru. The government recently revised its estimates of natural gas reserves here to 13.8 Tcf. This was the third time in two years that the estimates were revised upward. Some politics may be behind this revision as the opposition party in Peru claimed that too much natural gas was earmarked for export, leaving too little for domestic use. The Camisea natural gas fields were discovered by Shell in 1986. The project first became operational in August 2004 to make Peru a gas-rich nation with royalties of US$34 billion expected over the 30 year duration of the project. At present, Camisea produces around 92% of Peru’s total gas output, and meets more than 40% of Peruvian electricity generation, and 50,000 barrels of LPG for local consumption. It was reported to be producing 1.6 bcf as of March 2016, with around half of liftings sold to domestic market at regulated prices.
In 2000, a consortium led by Hunt Oil, a private oil and gas company, was awarded the rights to develop the natural gas reserves at the Camisea Field. Several years later, construction was begun on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility to export excess natural gas to world markets. Production at this field is currently coming from blocks 56 and 88. This LNG facility recently started up and began exporting natural gas. The first shipment of natural gas arrived in the United States in September 2010.
In April 2015, Tipiel, Technip’s subsidiary in Colombia, was awarded by the Consorcio Constructor Ductos del Sur, a front-end engineering design and detailed engineering design contract, on a lumpsum basis. This covers the development of a new gas pipeline to transport gas from the Camisea field to Southern Peru.
Launched by the Peruvian government, the project consists of more than 1,700 kms of 32\\\" gas pipeline. It aims to improve the existing Peruvian Energy Network, contributing to the development of an Energy Node and Petrochemical Hub in Southern Peru. The overall work will be performed by Tipiel’s offices in Bogota, Colombia.
