The project will see the exploration drilling of an oil field in the southern Campos Basin, off Rio de Janeiro state. The oil discovery was made at a depth of 3,478 metres in water. The field contains an estimated in-place volume of 1.4 billion barrels of oil. Xerelete contains relatively heavy oil (17º to 20º API). Total is making plans to drill new exploration wells at the Xerelete field off Brazil in 2013, in an effort to test deeper horizons before progressing with further development and commercial production in the area.
