BMCAL-4 is the name of the block which exploration had been conceded to El Paso in the Second Bid Round provided by the National Agency of Petroleum (ANP) in 2000.

The block is located in Camamu Almada Basin, next to Costa do Dendê, an extremely sensitive area of the region called Baixo Sul da Bahia. Actually, the area of the block BMCAL-4 is of 206 sq Km.

With the objective of keeping the local community always aware of the projects developed in the region, El Paso stimulates the discussion about subjects related to its activities, such as oil and gas, environmental issues, and the economical and social development of the region of Baixo Sul.

By this reason, the company maintains a straight and clear channel with the community by its office in the city of Camamu. All the steps of the project BMCAL-4, from the phase of environmental and social studies to the operational phase are presented in a very detailed way, with a didactical and objective language, so that all the citizens of the area may comprehend the Project BMCAL-4 and El Paso’s activities.

In August 2002, El Paso and Grant Geophysical do Brasil explored the subsoil of the Camamu Sedimentary Basin, more particularly the BM-CAL-4 Block, in order to define prospecting activities with greater accuracy, seeking for oil and natural gas. The seismic data survey (as it is called in technical terms), done in both offshore and onshore aims, took three months to be totally completed in the area of Península de Maraú.

The drilling campaign in the BM-CAL-4 Block ended in May, 2003 when El Paso tamped the four wells that it had drilled since December seeking for gas or oil. The objective of the second drilling campaign in the Block BM-CAL-4 is to evaluate the extension of Pinaúna Field, located at east of Pratigi beach, and also to research additional reserves of oil and gas in Camamu Almada Basin. After obtaining the Drilling Permit, it is predicted to drill 4 exploratory wells, being 1 wildcat (ELPS-16) and 3 contingents (ELPS-17, ELPS-18 and ELPS-19) in BM-CAL-4 Block.
