The REFICAR Cartagena Refinery Project involves the expansion and modernization of the REFICAR Cartagena refinery.The expansion is part of efforts by the Colombian government to become self-sufficient in gasoline and expand its petrochemicals industry. The project is expected to increase the refinery\'s production from its current 80,000 b/d to 165,000 b/d. The expansion will include new hydro treatment units as well as a new cracking unit (which will increase the cracker plant\'s capacity to 35,000 b/d). The upgraded facility will produce ultra low sulphur gasoline and diesel from a heavy crude oil slate.
