PEL 458 is located near the city of Newcastle, New South Wales, and extends over an area of approximately 2,000km2 from Belmont in the south to Myall Lakes in the north, Raymond Terrace in the west to the coast in the east. The focus of the proposed pilot operations in the Fullerton Cove area north of Newcastle are the upper Tomago Coal Measures. Future exploration activities will continue to target the Tomago coal measures in addition to the equally prospective Greta coal measures. Exploration drilling activities by Dart (then Arrow Energy Limited) commenced in January 2010. Since January 2010, Dart has completed 4 exploration holes (Fullerton-1, Fullerton-2, Fullerton-4 and Fullerton-3). If an economical gas resource is discovered, there are a number of existing and potential commercialisation options available, including:

- existing and planned major industries adjacent to Newcastle
- the reticulated gas network of Newcastle, Central Coast and lower North Coast
- -the proposed Tomago gas-fired power station, which has development approval for 790MW of gas-fired generation capacity, located immediately adjacent to PEL 458
- potential LNG export facilities.
