Project Profile

Value: Undisclosed
Location: Northeast tip of New Zealand’s North Island, Raukumara region of the East Coast basin, New Zealand
Area: 4,242 square kilometres
Start-up Year: -

New Zealand Energy had been awarded 100% interest in the East Cape permit on the northeast tip of New Zealand’s North Island. The block covered about 4,242 square kilometres in the Raukumara region of the East Coast basin, which was thought to contain resource potential in the conventional Miocence sands and the unconventional oil shale formations, Waipawa and Whangai. As a result of the acquisition, New Zealand Energy now controls four permits in the East Coast basin, covering a total of 8242 square kilometres. It will be the first company to explore the East Cape permit area since the mid-1980s and has lined up a work programme including technical studies, reprocessing 145 kilometres of 2D seismic and acquiring 40 kilometres of new 2D seismic data. NZEC received a five-year extension, later cancelled prematurely, in June 2014 to allow exploration of unconventional oil shale in the area.
