WA 442-P and NT/P81 are located offshore Northern Australia in shallow water depths of less than 60 m in the Bonaparte Gulf. These contiguous permits cover an area of 3,900 sq km and are situated approximately 20 km off the Western Australian and Northern Territory coasts approximately 320 km southwest of Darwin. The permits include the undeveloped Turtle and Barnett oil discoveries and are situated southeast of the producing Blacktip gas field. There are three play fairways recognised offering multiple play types comprising structural, stratigraphic and combination structural and stratigraphic leads and prospects:
- Turtle and Barnett undeveloped oil discoveries and associated Messner and East Barnett oil leads
- Milligans Formation oil leads
- Nova Prospect, deep gas play
The shallow undeveloped Turtle and Barnett oil fields comprise multiple oil bearing reservoirs in Carboniferous to Permian aged clastic sediments. Three wells tested oil with Barnett-2 flowing up to 921 bbl/d on jet pump from the Early Permian. Turtle -2 and Barnett – 2 produced oil and gas from the Milligans Formation on drill stem tests which confirms the presence of an active working petroleum system in both WA 442-P and NT/P81. Following the reprocessing of 2D seismic data in WA 442-P and NT/P81 a prospects and leads inventory has been developed for the acreage. The Messner structural lead lies between the undeveloped Turtle and Barnett oil fields and has potential at the Milligans Formation and shallower. A potential extension of the Barnett field to the east requires confirmation by 3D seismic data.
Fourteen leads have been identified by Isis Petroleum Consultants (ISIS) in the Milligans Formation with estimated combined mean unrisked oil-in-place of 683 MMbbl. The combined estimate for gross unrisked mean Prospective Resources for the 14 leads is 218MMbbl. The Nova gas prospect is a fault bounded anticlinal structure. An independent evaluation of the Nova prospect provides a gross mean unrisked gas-in-place estimate of 6.93 Tcf. The corresponding estimate of gross mean unrisked Prospective Resources is 3.46Tcf.
