Project Profile
Value: Undisclosed
Location: Northern Territory\'s onshore McArthur basin, south of the Roper River
Area: 11,210 square kilometres
Start-up Year: -
Empire Energy has been awarded an exploration permit in the Northern Territory\'s onshore McArthur basin. Empire has been granted the permit for an initial five-year period which will see it need to carry out geological and geophysical studies, shoot seismic, drill a test well and drill one horizontal well. The EP 184 permit lies in the petroleum prospective central trough of the basin, south of the Roper River, covering 11,210 square kilometres.
The permit area contains both conventional and unconventional targets in the Palaeo-Proterozoic age black carbonaceous shales of the Barney Creek and equivalent formations. The company plans to kick off a 156 kilometre 2D seismic shoot during the 2014 dry season in the Northern Territory to confirm the geological structure and sedimentary sequence architecture of the McArthur basin in the northern part of the licence. It will also use the seismic data to confirm the depth and thickness detail of the target black shale formations and the four-way closed structures identified during a recent 3D mapping programme. It also plans to start drilling initial exploration wells in the basin in 2014. EP 184 was the first area to be granted out of seven Empire has applied for which collectively cover 59,172 square kilometres.
