Early Cretaceous sandstones sealed by the mid Cretaceous mudstones within the Carpentaria Basin provide excellent reservoir potential where oil shows have been encountered in these rocks on the southern margin of the basin. Source rocks are known to exist in the Mesoproterozoic of the McArthur Basin.
