Start-up Year: -

The Queensland Hunter Gas Pipeline is a critical energy infrastructure project that will deliver competitively priced gas to eastern Australia to meet growing demand for gas and improve security of supply. The pipeline will be approximately 833 kilometres in length from the Wallumbilla Gas Hub in Queensland to Newcastle. Around 611 kilometres of the pipeline will be within NSW, with 222 kilometres in Queensland. The pipeline will pass through ten local government areas in NSW – Moree Plains, Narrabri, Gunnedah, Liverpool Plains, Upper Hunter, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Maitland, Port Stephens and Newcastle. The overall pipeline investment of about US$850 million is expected to result in around US$560 million of direct investment in NSW, with US$290 million in Queensland.

Initially the pipeline will free flow 85PJ per annum with the possibility of increasing to 160PJ or more by the future installation of compressors. NSW currently uses 200+ PJ per annum. It is anticipated that the project will provide up to 600 jobs during construction and 25 initial operation. Additional staff will be required when compression is added. The pipe itself will be made of 130,000 tonnes of steel and will be buried approximately 700mm under the surface along its length. The Queensland Hunter Gas Pipeline is a proposal by Hunter Gas Pipeline Pty Ltd, which is going to be the operator and owner of the pipeline.
