Finucane South is located in a water depth of about 459 feet (140 metres) in WA-191-P, which is situated at the northern end of the Carnarvon Basin about 9 miles (15 kilometres) east of the Mutineer facility. Serving as operator of the permit is Santos, holding a 41.6% interest; Kufpec Australia holds 33.4%; Nippon Oil holds 25%.

Santos found oil at the Finucane South prospect in May 2011. Gathered data confirmed a net oil column of 59 feet (18 metres) in excellent quality reservoir sands in the Angel formation. The well, drilled by the Stena Clyde semisub, is located nearly 4 miles (7 kilometres) from the Fletcher oil field discovered in 2009 and about 9 miles (14 kilometres) from existing oil production facilities at Mutineer Exeter.
