Quickly becoming the world\'s fastest developed LNG project, the Pluto LNG Project incorporates gas production from two offshore fields: Pluto and Xena. Located offshore Western Australia, the gas fields are situated in the highly productive Carnarvon Basin. Woodside Petroleum serves as the operator of the Pluto project, holding a 90% interest. Kanasi Electric and Tokyo Gas each hold a 5% interest in the project.
Pluto
Discovered in April 2005, the Pluto gas field is located on permit WA-350-P and license WA-34-L, about 118 miles (190 kilometers) northwest of Karratha on the coast of Western Australia. The massive gas find is expected to hold 4.4 Tcf (125 Bcm) of recoverable dry gas reserves. Reaching a total depth of 10,827 feet (3,300 meters), the Atwood Eagle semisub drilled the Pluto-1 discovery well in 3,202 feet (976 meters) of water. Preliminary analysis indicated a gas column measuring 686 feet (209 meters), and a subsequent production test established a stabilized gas flow of 9.5 MMcf/d (.27 MMcm/d) through a 28/64-inch choke. Analysis of the wireline log data on the Pluto-1 well showed the well encountered gas pay in the Triassic, Lower Jurassic, Mungaroo and Brigadier formations. Drilled to a total depth of 10,942 feet (3,335 meters) by the Sedco 703 semisub, the Pluto-2 appraisal well is located 5.3 miles (8.5 kilometers) south of the discovery well. Spud on July 21, 2005, the well confirmed the southerly extent of the field by encountering a gas column measuring 207 feet (63 meters).
Xena
Also located on WA-350-P and WA-34-L, Xena was discovered in September 2006. The Jack Bates semisub drilled the Xena-1ST1 exploration well to a total depth of 11,450 feet (3,490 meters). Located 4 miles (6 kilometers) east of the Pluto-2 appraisal well in 584 feet (178 meters) of water, the Xena discovery well encountered a gas column of 161 feet (49 meters) in good-quality reservoir sandstones. Drilled by the Ocean Bounty semisub in the first quarter of 2008, two appraisal wells on the Xena field, Xena-2 and Xena-3, confirmed the field and established the presence of gas-saturated sands in another fault block. Xena is estimated to contain 600 Bcf (17 Bcm) of recoverable dry gas.
