Located in the southern Timor Sea 404 miles (650 kilometres) from Darwin, Australia, the Montara project encompasses the Montara, Skua and Swift/Swallow offshore oil fields. Montara is located on AC/RL3, and Swift/Swallow and Skua are located on AC/P34. Wholly owned and operated by Coogee Resources until December 2008, the project is now owned and operated by Thai NOC PTTEP.
The Montara oil and gas field was first discovered in March 1988. A subsequent well in 2002, Montara-3, tested the well and it flowed oil up to 5,000 bopd. The field consists of an oil column measuring 33 feet (10 metres) and a gas column measuring 82 feet (25 metres). Additionally, two major finds were made in April 2006 that proved the commercial viability of the project. First, the Swift North-1 well drilled by the Ocean Bounty semisubmersible discovered a 75 foot (23 metre) oil column. Then, the Ocean Bounty drilled the Swallow-1 well and encountered two pay zones, with oil columns measuring 82 feet (25 metres) and 10 feet (3 metres). The project boasts probable reserves reaching nearly 40 MMbo.
