Project Profile
Value: US$430 million
Location: Sydney (Kurnell) and Brisbane (Lytton) Australia
Capacity: 6.75 million tons/annum & 135,000 bbl/day (Kurnell, Demolished) and 5.3 million tons/annum & 106,000 bbl/day (Lytton)
The Lytton refinery came on stream in 1965. Lytton Refinery starts production in 2006 of cleaner fuels following the commissioning of a diesel hydrotreater unit and a benzene hydrogenation unit and in 2009 a new Diesel Hydrotreater Unit was commissioned.
Sales from Lytton amounted to 2.9 billion litres in the first half of 2016, 20% higher year-on-year, but this was largely offset by lower refining volumes. In full-year 2016, Lytton generated EBIT of A$205 million (US$154.9 million) compared with A$406 million (US$306.77 million) in 2015, despite 14% higher throughput sales at 6.2 billion litres, as the Caltex Refiner Margin slipped from US$16.46 per barrel to US$10.29 per barrel during the same timescale. Higher production volumes were owed to a US$20 million maintenance programme conducted at Lytton during 2015.
The Kurnell refinery clean fuels project was completed with the commissioning of the diesel hydrotreater and benzene hydrogenation units in 2006 and in 2009 a new Diesel Hydrotreater Unit commissioned. However, by 2010 the lubricants refinery was closed. By October 2014, Kurnell had shut the last of its processing units and commenced operations as the new Kurnell import terminal, the largest fuel import terminal in the Southern Hemisphere, which includes an upgraded port and berthing facility. Decommissioning at the former refinery should finish by the first half of 2018.
