Water Depth: 55 metres
The Ek and Balam fields are located offshore in the Bay of Campeche, 95 kilometres northeast of Ciudad del Carmen. The assets lie in water depths of around 55 metres in the Campeche Sound. Ek is part of the Cantarell complex, which was Pemex\'s production mainstay from the 1980s until it began its terminal decline a decade ago.
Ek produced 24,000 bpd in October 2016, down from 27,000 bpd in 2015 and 42,000 bpd five years ago. In regards to Balam there has been no official production records released since it began producing less than 10,000 bpd in 2013. Pemex aims to produce an extra 7.95 million barrels of oil from Ek during the remainder of the field\'s life, with an additional 7.57 million barrels targeted from Balam.
Development
Mexico\'s National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) has approved Pemex\'s new development plan for the Ek and Balam assets in 2017. Pemex wants to combine the two blocks into one asset and expedite development itself rather than with a partner. The Government have already factored in a 113 billion pesos (US$5.48 billion) long term infrastructure development plan for the two fields. Almost half invested already, with around 52 billion pesos (US$2.5 billion) to be rolled out in stages from 2020 onwards.
