ExxonMobil\'s Baton Rouge Refinery is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. The refinery is the third largest refinery in the United States, occupying 2,100 acres and processing over 502,500 barrels of crude oil daily. Standard Oil first erected the refinery in 1909. The refinery manufactures more than 300 products, including motor gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, aviation gasoline, lubricating oils, waxes, petroleum coke, liquefied petroleum gas and chemical feedstock (used to produce chemicals). Baton Rouge is one of the largest and most versatile petrochemical hubs. Today\'s facility is part of a complex made of nine individual plants across the region. The main plant is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The facilities located at Baton Rouge include:
Anchorage Chemical Terminal: In operation since 1972, the Anchorage Chemical Terminal is located across the Mississippi River from the Baton Rouge Chemical Plant. The facility provides storage and distribution of petrochemical products for ExxonMobil’s Chemical Plant via all modes of transportation.
Baton Rouge Chemical Plant: Beginning as a separate facility in 1940, it has since introduced a number of technological firsts. In 1931, for example, when the site was still a chemical unit within the refinery, it produced butyl rubber for the first time in history. The Chemical Plant manufactures nearly 6.6 billion pounds of petrochemical products per year making this facility one of the largest chemical plants in the world and producing everything from methyl ethyl ketone (paint, coatings and adhesives solvent), to isoprene (tape, diapers and packaging adhesives) and much more.
Baton Rouge Plastics Plant (BRPP): Originally opened in 1968 near Scotlandville and Zachary, north of Baton Rouge, the plant produces more than 1,200 million pounds of products per year.
Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant (BRPO): Purchased by Exxon Chemical in 1998, the plant has been modernized and expanded over the past years to meet customer demand. The plant has increased capacity to more than 2.9 billion pounds of products annually, producing high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) for customer applications, including blow-molded milk containers, food containers, containers for shampoos, detergents and cleaners, durable drums for industrial products, bed liners for trucks and more.
Port Allen Lubricants Plant (PAL): Constructed in 1990, the Port Allen Lubricants Plant is a modern lube blending, packaging and warehouse operation that provides products to many ExxonMobil customers throughout the world. More than 100 million gallons of finished products are shipped annually.
Genesis Energy LP recently invested US$125 million to improve ExxonMobil\'s existing assets in the Baton Rouge area. The investment includes plans to build an 18-mile, 20-inch diameter crude oil pipeline that connects Genesis Energy\'s Port Hudson terminal, to ExxonMobil\'s Baton Rouge refinery. The Baton Rouge refinery\'s tank farm has a capacity of 502,500 barrel-per-day (bpd).
