Project Profile

Value: Undisclosed
Location: Fox Creek, Alberta
Production: 90 mmcf of natural gas per day
Start-up Year: 2007
Completion: 2018

The processing plant consists of high (22% H2S) and low sour (2000ppm H2S) inlets. Inlet condensate is sweetened and stabilized. Gas is processed through the amine and refrigeration units and sent to sales. Liquid products include a propane/butane mixture and stabilized condensate.

The project consists of the installation of an acid gas injection system to replace acid gas flaring and the operation of a sulphur recovery unit, via a Multi-Stage Claus Unit, with fossil fuels. Previously, approximately 1/4 of the acid gas generated at the Kaybob Gas Plant was sent for flaring and 3/4 was sent for sulphur recovery through a Multi-Stage Claus Unit at SemCAMS K3 Plant.

In the project condition the capture and permanent sequestration of the entire acid gas stream directly reduces the quantity of CO2 released to the atmosphere. Further, the process of compression, transportation, and injection of acid gas reduces the quantity of GHG emissions released to the atmosphere relative to more GHG intensive baseline processes (i.e. flaring) required for safe disposal of the hydrogen sulphide (H2S) contained within the acid gas stream.

As the activities of the project are applicable under the Quantification Protocol for Acid Gas Injection and AGI is not an industry standard, the results of this project are considered additional and would not have occurred under business as usual circumstances.
